Statement of Faith

Jesus Christ died, scourged and crucified on Golgotha (Calvary), during Passover. He was buried on the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and He rose on the third day, on the Feast of First Fruits. He shed his blood as propitiation for the sin of mankind. We receive salvation by believing on Jesus Christ, by accepting His gift of salvation through confession (I John 1: 9) and repentance (John 3: 5) of our sin. We are saved by grace through faith alone, not by works lest any man should boast (see Ephesians 2: 8, 9). There is no more to salvation than that; it is God's gift to those who accept it freely.

Never let anyone tell you that there is more to salvation than that. Never let anyone tell you that you must do good works in order to be saved. Don't even let anyone tell you that you have to do good works to confirm or somehow prove that you are saved. Oh, to be sure, if you are saved, and if you are growing in Jesus Christ, then you will do good works (Philippians 2: 13). But these good works are a consequence of your growth, not a condition of your salvation. Let me explain.

This is a statement of faith, so let's consider faith. Jesus said if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed you could command mountains and they would obey you, and nothing would be impossible to you (Matthew 17: 20). Have you commanded any mountains lately? I haven't either, but don't worry. Christ explains that this means your faith starts as the tiniest of seeds, but that it grows into a great and mighty thing. Ephesians 2: 8, 9 make plain that we are not saved by works, but verse 10 goes on to explain that we become His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works that God before ordained of us. Philippians 2: 13 explains that we won't even perceive that we are doing what God wants, but that we will be doing those things that seem natural to us to do (God works in us both to will and to do good works).

But faith doesn't always grow stronger. Sometimes faith dies. James 2: 17 tells us that without works faith is dead, and in John 15: 1, 2 we are told explicitly that if we do not bear fruit, God will take us away. Note that He did not say He would send or put us away, but take us away. If you "send" or "put" something you move it away from yourself, whereas if you "take" something you bring it unto yourself. The word makes quite a difference, don't you think? There is no threat that you will lose your salvation, only that you might disappoint God. Read on to verse 16 and see again that God ordained of us to bear fruit, so let's just trust that we will.

Still, this is a true statement concerning faith. If you do not grow in faith, if you do not bear fruit, God can and will take you home. But if you grow your faith strong, if you withstand God's purging (John 15: 2) and overcome, you will bear fruit and do great and mighty things that God has ordained of you.

This then is my desire, my statement concerning faith, for both you and me. I desire that we grow stronger faith that we might do those works that God has ordained of us, without disappointing Him.

I John 1: 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Ephesians 2: 8 - 10
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:

Staff & Sling Ministry's Purpose

The Role of the Word in Affairs of the Church

The principle purpose of Staff & Sling Ministry is to expound on scripture for the edification of the saints. Christians need to grow in faith, and "... faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God" (Romans 10: 17). I do not claim to understand this any better than the next person, but in a very deep and spiritually meaningful way, Jesus is the Word (John 1: 1, 14). To study the Word is then to get to know Jesus.

Moreover, we have Jesus' example of the power of scripture in living our daily lives. When He was tempted in the wilderness, in every case He responded to, and overcame, Satan's temptations by citing scripture (Matthew 4: 4, 7, 10). Let's not overlook the fact that Jesus was fully God incarnate. In other words, anything He said would have been, by definition, God's Word. Nonetheless, He demonstrated the sufficiency of scripture by relying exclusively on the same.

For more insight into the importance of scriptures, read the article If You Won't Believe the Bible, .... In light of these things it is easy then to understand that I believe there is nothing we can do that is more important than studying and learning and sharing God's Word.

Toward that end, this web site is organized as something of an on-line magazine. The most recent articles added to the web site are listed and linked to on the home page. Moreover, theStaff & Sling Articles page contains an archive listing of all the old articles.

But beyond the need to learn scriptures, we have the need to apply those scriptures in our daily lives, as we live and interact with the world around us. To be sure we are not of the world, but we are still in the world (see John 17: 6, 9, 11, 14 - 16, 18), and with a purpose I might add.

The Role of the Church in Affairs of State

In Matthew 5: 13 - 16 Jesus instructs us to be salt and light to the world. As salt we are a preservative, staving off both decadence and God's judgment until the appointed time (Matthew 13: 24 - 30). As light we drive back the darkness, making plain and subject to self-scrutiny the ravages of sin.

Hence the second part of the Staff & Sling Ministry's purpose is to preach and encourage revival among the saints, educating them as needed so that they may fulfill their responsibility to be salt and light in the world around them. In other words, it is purposed to motivate and prepare the saints to both call our nation to repentance and to fulfill their civic responsibility wisely.

And make no mistake, we all have a civic responsibility, especially in the United States. It has been said that Satan's greatest deception was convincing man that he doesn't exist. I think convincing Christians that they should keep their faith to themselves, especially in civic matters, has to be right up there at the top of that list.

All governments exist, and all rulers have power, because God ordained them (Romans 13: 1, 2). In this nation, the United States, it is the electorate (the people) that bear the crucial role and responsibility to hold our representative government accountable. It is written into the foundations of our nation that the electorate is the ultimate check and balance of our government. Therefore, this is as God ordained.

So we, as Christians, are not merely responsible. We are doubly responsible. As citizens we are doubly responsible, both to the nation and to God, to fulfill our God-ordained responsibility to hold our representatives accountable, especially when they steer our nation towards His wrath. And moreover we are also doubly responsible, both to the nation and to God, to be the salt and light that God has purposed for us.

Scripture says quite succinctly that if one is charged to warn the wicked and does not, and the wicked then perish in their iniquity, then God will require the blood of the lost at the hands of the one who withheld God's warning (Ezekiel 3: 18 - 21). Or in keeping to the scripture already cited, Matthew 5: 13, if as salt you have lost your savour, what good are you?

But too many Christians have been too complacent for too long. Lies have been told until they have been accepted as truth. Our own First Amendment has been so perverted that instead of guaranteeing our religious liberty it now serves to silence the prayers of school children while protecting filth-mongers like Hugh Hefner and Larry Flynt. How much more than this can we call good evil, and evil good (Isaiah 5: 20)?

Can there be any doubt that ours is a decadent society? I challenge you to name a single liberty that we as a nation hold sacrosanct that doesn't involve sexual indulgence. "Free speech," you ask? There has been no greater subversion of our liberty than the abject assault on political free speech that is the McCain-Feingold Act, yet it has been passed by our representatives, signed into law by our President and upheld as Constitutional by our Supreme Court without so much as being noticed by the American people. The Patriot Act was just renewed again, with the peoples' blessing. Do you know what new powers it gives law enforcement officials to set aside your civic protections? Do you care?

But try to pass a law protecting God-ordained marriage and people take notice. Try to pass a law to protect our children from predatory pedophiles and watch the ensuing uproar. How many men stand quietly, timidly aside while strangers grope and strip search their wives and daughters for no other reason than wanting to board an airplane? Yet as long as the government, "stays out of their bedrooms," the people are content.

Now I ask you, who among us, the electorate of this nation and the elect of God, stood to say, "No! The First Amendment does not protect pornography and vulgarity!" Who among us stood to say, "No! The Establishment Clause does not preclude our public schools from teaching Christianity!" Who among us stood to say, "No! The Constitution does not give mothers the right to murder their unborn children!" Who among us even took the time to learn the truth, that these assertions are all lies?

How many of us chose instead to simply accept the lies as truth? How many of us have simply accepted prima facie the lie that we can't understand the Constitution, or Supreme Court rulings? How many of us have simply accepted the lie that judges are appointed for life? Most have heard of The Federalist Papers, but how many know that they were a series of 85 articles published, not in some elite Ivy League peer reviewed law journal, but in the New York Independent Journal, the daily newspaper, beginning with Federalist I on 27 October 1787? They were written and published for the common man, not the scholarly elite, but who among us has ever read them?

God and Christians have been pushed from the public discourse, at least in part because too many Christians are perfectly willing to be pushed out, to abandon the world, whose preservation they are divinely charged with, to decadence and the wiles of Satan. Can there be then any question that we risk God's wrath? Yes, fulfilling our responsibilities to God and country may require an effort on our part, if reading is an effort, but not much of one. In this information age we live in, none of this, not the Federalist Papers or the Constitution or Supreme Court rulings or proposed legislation, is ever more than an internet search away. So if we stand before God and He asks why we didn't warn our neighbors before they were lost to decadence and iniquity, we will be without excuse.

So to reiterate, this is the second part of Staff & Sling Ministry's purpose, to call the saints to revival so that they can fulfill their responsibility both to God and to the world whose preservation they are charged with. Despite whatever the world may have told you, religion and politics are most assuredly your business. So far from shying clear of political issues, it is purposed in this ministry that wherein Kingdom matters are involved, such issues will be addressed directly on this web site.

Romans 10: 17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Staff & Sling Ministry's Name

In I Samuel chapter 17 we can read the oft-told tale of David and Goliath. We all know it well. We've heard it recounted in sermons and bedtime stories throughout our lives. But one day I was reading the account in scripture and I noticed something that until then I had missed. This something, this tidbit, made plain just how faithful David truly was. And it was awe-inspiring.

To be sure, ask anyone if the story of David and Goliath demonstrates great faith on David's part and almost everyone (those familiar with the story at least) will immediately agree. Nonetheless, I have yet to find anyone who when asked could tell me why.

The most common answer I've heard was that David demonstrated his great faith because he went up against a giant with only a sling. But I disagree. If we read verses 34 through 37 (of I Samuel 17) we find that as a shepherd, while watching his father's flocks, David slew both a lion and a bear. Read on through the next few verses and you'll find that indeed David tried to wear Saul's armor and sword, but it was too heavy for him and he put it off in favor of his normal clothes, and his staff and sling. So why, you ask, does this not demonstrate David's great faith?

David lost all of his agility, weighed down under the added burden of armor. Moreover, he had no experience with a sword but he was both experienced and lethal with his staff and sling. He killed a lion with his staff and sling. He killed a bear with his staff and sling. So no, in point of fact, I don't think it showed great faith that David went into battle with only his staff and sling. It showed great common sense. These were the tools with which he was most proficient. These were the weapons with which he was most lethal.

The next suggestion of how David demonstrated his great faith that day is given rise to by verse 40. Therein we read that David chose five smooth stones from the brook. Now it happens that if one reads the books of Chronicles (e.g. I Chronicles 20: 8) one will discover that Goliath had four kinsmen (or perhaps countrymen) and that once all was said and done David, or his men, killed all of them. Many then infer that David chose five stones because he knew that Goliath had four kinsmen. Many say that this was a demonstration of David's great faith, that he went into battle not against a single giant, but expecting to face five giants. And yet again I disagree.

It is dangerous hermeneutics to infer more into scripture than is written. Yes, scripture very specifically tells us that David chose five stones, but it tells us nothing of his motivation for doing so. Scripture simply does not say that David had any knowledge of Goliath's kinsmen at that time. But we know that God knew of Goliath's kinsmen, whether David did or not. No, I do not think that choosing five stones was a demonstration of great faith on David's part. If anything, it was a demonstration of great faithfulness on God's part. Even before the need was known, if indeed it was not, and surely before the need was manifest (since David in fact did not kill Goliath's four kinsmen on that day), God seems to have moved in David's heart to see to it that all of his needs, both actual and potential, were met (Philippians 2:13).

So where in scripture do we find an account of David's great faith on that day? Read verses 46 - 48. Note in verse 46 that David said, "... I will give the carcasses of the host (army) of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, ...," (parenthetic added). In verse 48 we read, "... that David hastened, and ran toward the army ...." David charged into battle not against a single giant. He didn't charge into battle against five giants. David charged into battle, armed only with his staff and sling, armed only with those tools the Lord had prepared him with, against the whole of the Philistine army.

Let me repeat that, just in case you read over it too quickly. Read carefully now, and pay attention. David charged into battle not against a single giant. He didn't charge into battle against five giants. David charged into battle, armed only with his staff and sling, armed only with those tools the Lord had prepared him with, against the whole of the Philistine army. And he did so trusting God to give him the victory. Oh, that I could be like David, to have faith so strong. This is the reason I've chosen the name Staff & Sling. It is an assertion of my goal, both for myself and for you, that we should both be quick to take up our own staffs and slings, whatever tools or talents they may be that God has prepared us with, charging into whatever battle God sets before us, no matter the corporeal appearance, trusting only in Him.

I Samuel 17:
1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which [belongeth] to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and [there was] a valley between them.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height [was] six cubits and a span.
5 And [he had] an helmet of brass upon his head, and he [was] armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat [was] five thousand shekels of brass.
6 And [he had] greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
7 And the staff of his spear [was] like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head [weighed] six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set [your] battle in array? [am] not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
12 Now David [was] the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name [was] Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men [for] an old man in the days of Saul.

20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard [them].
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, [that] the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who [is] this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

29 And David said, What have I now done? [Is there] not a cause?
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed [them] before Saul: and he sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou [art but] a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered [it] out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught [him] by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but [there was] no sword in the hand of David.
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.
53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son [is] this youth? And Abner said, [As] thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling [is].
57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58 And Saul said to him, Whose son [art] thou, [thou] young man? And David answered, I [am] the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

I Chronicles 20: 8 These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
